life in South Korea in a funny, positive light

Foreigners code of conduct April 9, 2008

Filed under: My so called life....in Pusan — sweetkat @ 1:23 pm

I don’t know why there is so much debate over this.  To handle the occasions where we may run into other foreigners, we should treat them like our comrades rather than germs we can’t wait to wash our hands of.

So in honour of that sentiment, I propose a foreigner code of conduct for just this situation.

If you meet another foreigner on the street, you can choose to make eye contact, nod in acknowledgment or smile.  If they dont’ acknowledge you,  don’t take offence.  However if someone does do any of these things in your direction and you are aware of it, acknowledge it somehow.  It does not mean you have to have a conversation.

You took time out of your BUSY day to write this? Where did you learn your manners? I have a full life and treat everyone with respect. Aretha Franklin wrote a song for people just like you called R.E.S.P.E.C.T. You should listen to it. Yes I am Canadian and proud of it and thats why I can treat you with kindness you don’t deserve. Have a nice day.

I know I kind of picked on you before, but don’t listen to that tool who commented above. Linking yourself on pweb will attract a fair amount of haters. I actually agree with you when it comes to seeing other foreigners here. A simple courteous nod won’t kill anyone.

Going to Busan always makes me laugh. A lot of nice foreigners but also some fucking twats. Where I come from – we literally run up to the foreigner and and expect them to become our friends. I’m not even joking. So many foreigners in Busan are so wrapped up in their own little world – but in the smaller cities of Korea you are lucky to see a foreigner. And in my small little city – we are lucky to have so many great foreigners.

    Oh Jimmy….

‘get a life and i bet your a canadian!!!’

    you are or you’re

‘your a’ is just incorrect English – even if you are American.

Sorry dude – I know you claim to be an English teacher but I have to doubt your claim – I think you might just be a nasty, drunken foreigner who hates Koreans and foreigners alike. – yeah, you just claimed the mantle of DICKHEAD.

I live in Busan and always aknowledge other foreigners with a quick hello or a nod. Some answer/others don’t. I don’t take offense, everyone is different.

No, he sounds more like an angry kyopo. Those guys are the real haters club and yes the ‘your’ was the icing on the cake.

After that brainfart I can assure you that he most likely does teach English;unfortunately. Giving Jimbob the benefit of the doubt, he’s more likely jimmygit than jimmybrit if he is from the failed empire.

I think what you said is perfect! And exactly how I feel too.
    Take care.
